Liv Tyler vs. Sarah Jessica Parker: Who Ya Got ?
Once again, it's a weekend battle of head-to-head stars. In this corner, we have the ringleader of the “Sex and the City” foursome, Sarah Jessica Parker. And in this corner we have rock star daughter-turned-model-turned-actress, Liv Tyler. This one's going to be ugly. You know the rules. Let's drop the cage. Two women enter ! One woman leaves !
In the box office this weekend: Winner = Parker
“Sex and the City” is like “Star Wars” for girls. And much like when the “Star Wars” prequels opened years ago, nothing is going to stop this movie from being a weekend juggernaut. Nothing. Especially not a small film like “The Strangers”. Or negative reviews.
In the critical arena: Winner = Parker
Despite the tremendous problems with the film -- involving the length, the level of the humor, and the performances -- fans reviewing “SATC” are looking past them (while still mentioning them) and proclaiming their love for the film and its stars. While this might wear off once the excitement has died down, it sure is getting heaps of praise. Those who strongly dislike the film (usually men) have been discounted as their demographic isn't the target for this film and their reviews apparently don't count. “The Strangers”, on the other hand, hasn't even been shown to many critics, which may result in critics paying just to cheap-shot it for not being shown.
In their careers: Winner = Tyler
Parker may have Carrie Bradshaw, but the show is beginning to show its age. Ten years from now “Sex and the City” will be remembered with fondness and admiration for what it did for women on television. Tyler, however, had a sizable role in “Lord of the Rings”, which will remain a classic for quite some time, if not indefinitely. Add to that the number of other blockbusters she's been a part of and her insertion into the rapidly growing “Avengers” universe and you begin to see someone who is not yet done in the industry. Sarah Jessica Parker peaked: this is her last hurrah, a fond, if not exuberant, farewell.
In my heart of hearts = Tyler
I'm a guy, thus immune to whatever evil voodoo hex attracts people to “Sex and the City”. It also means that I think “Lord of the Rings” is, like, the single coolest thing ever to happen in my lifetime that doesn't contain the words ‘Star’ or ‘Wars’. She's my elf princess. And I will be her Level-10 Human Ranger any day.
Winner = Parker
The force is strong with this one. Or the Cosmos are strong. I don't know how that show works...
